If you are a client:
Take a top-down approach to implementing SOA concepts and you will have a higher likelihood of making your company more agile and competitive. Those who approach it with trepidation in a piecemeal approach will struggle.
You will need to:
- Capture application functionality and dependencies
- Identify any current services that may have been built or delivered from a third-party solution
- Map workflows of applications and sub-processes
- Identify redundant information across the enterprise
- Identify data models, reports and translations of similar data
- Start small with easy wins like single sign-on, error handling, monitoring and notifications
- Create an implementation project plan with measurable milestones
